Vanity Fair Portraits
The National Portrait Gallery has announced details of major 2008 exhibition,
Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913-2008, which marks 95 years since the
title's 1913 launch and 25 since its 1983 rebirth following a 57 year hiatus.
Burberry is set to sponsor the exhibition, which runs from February 14 to May
26. Exploring Vanity Fair's high octane and agenda-setting images of
celebrities, exhibited photographers from the first inception of the title
include Edward Steichen, Man Ray and Cecil Beaton, and sitters including Albert
Einstein, Virginia Woolf and Charlie Chaplin; from the current incarnation,
Annie Leibowitz, Mario Testino and Helmut Newton are among photographers
presented, with subjects ranging from Madonna, to Kate Winslet, and Lance
Armstrong. A hardback book, Vanity Fair: The Portraits, is published by NPG to
celebrate the dual anniversaries of the title and coincide with the exhibition,
featuring 350 illustrations; it will be distributed in the US and Canada from autumn 2008.
